Deep breath before the plunge ….

After four “practice packs” and countless decisions (which jeans?, c’mon!), stuffing packing cubes, rolling the compression bags, decanting liquids to ensure they all fit in the 1 liter ziploc, etc, the day has finally arrived.

As I type, we’re somewhere over middle America, on our way to JFK airport, at 4PM PDT, where we overnight.  This is a good thing, hoping it helps us with the time change.

Tomorrow afternoon, we fly 9-10 hours overnight into Athens, then on to Santorini, arriving at 10AM Greece time.

Unlike Tom, I am not typically able to find sleep on a plane.  So I tried a few things to help me on the overnight flight:

Comfy travel clothes & compression socks

Homeopathic jet lag pills

Ayr nasal saline gel

Foot hammock

Eyemask, as recommended by the Minimalists

Here’s what worked and what didn’t:

Comfy travel clothes were a win!  I worse a silky, loose fitting tee and buttery soft joggers – almost like pajamas.

We took the homeopathic jet lag pills as prescribed.  Since we didn’t have a “control group” to compare, it’s not certain if it made a difference.  What was amazing is that I actually slept on the plane -first time ever – albeit only for an hour or so.

The Ayr nasal spray seemed to help.  After flying, nasal passages seems to dry out.  This spray kept ours moist and probably helped us stay healthy.

The foot hammock and eye-mask were good and may have contributed to getting some sleep.

We landed in Athens and got our passports stamped!  Then off to Santorini on another full flight (yes, it truly is the year of “revenge travel”!).  Our driver was waiting at the airport for us and whisked us away to our lodging, Caldera’s Majesty, a family run place not quite a hotel, but not quite a B&B, and perfect for us, a modest accommodation with privacy and an unparalleled view of the caldera.

On my next post, I’ll discuss some of our experiences on this gorgeous island.
