Conor Pass & Ballyseede Castle

Conor Pass translates to An Chonair, which means “The Path”.  After seeing photos of the narrow, twisting road I feel compelled to try it.  Isn’t it beautiful?  Although it’s wild to think this is actually a two way road!!!

In the morning the rain is blowing sideways, not unlike the Oregon coast.  We are both looking forward to our next stay in Ballyseede Castle.  The good news is that it’s only a two hour drive.  The challenging part is that we’re driving over Conor Pass, one of the most beautiful stretches of road in Ireland, albeit frightening.  The bad news is that Amy, a hurricane level storm, is on the way.

When we tell the innkeeper we are going over Conor Pass, she tells us it will be very wet but not crowded at least, since not many drivers (and certainly no bicyclists) would want to make the trip during a storm.   I love driving and Melanie loves rollercoasters, so this is a win-win for us, except maybe the storm part.  After we grab some coffee to fortify ourselves, we hit the road, hoping to beat Amy to the Pass.   The top of the pass usually offers beautiful views like the image above.  Sadly, we saw mostly fog, nevertheless we felt exhilarated at our accomplishment.

Upon arrival at Ballyseede Castle and the clouds literally part and we are rewarded with an Irish double rainbow.  Walking into the castle, our jaws drop.

This place is stunning.  It’s like staying in a museum.  We are welcomed with a formal afternoon tea and settle into our spacious rooms, feeling like princesses.  We are able to walk the grounds a bit and need to keep pinching ourselves.  Is this place real?   We meet some fellow travelers, celebrating a birthday.  They wore crowns – perfect!  So nice to meet Michele, Matthew, & Michael!

Good grief. I drove in Greece in some similar situations. I was so nervous that I quit after the roads kept getting worse every day. I finally quit, returned to the “good” roads, and meandered back to Athens. It took a while for my stomach to return to normal. You must be made of some tough stuff!!! Doubt that I will ever travel over Connor Pass . . .
